Your pets first groom to the groomerApril 16 2013

Your pets first groom

Bringing your pet to the groomer for the first time can be a bit scary for the owner, but also it can be scary for the groomer when a 130lb dog show up for their first groom.  We handle all sizes but sometimes teaching a dog table manners can take a lot of work. So here is what you can do to help us make it a better experience.   (some info is taken from Barkleigh productions sheets)

1-Be on time, when a groomer books appointments, we have time slots, so when people are late , it puts everyone behind- which means your pet may not get all the time they normally would.

2-Early Grooming is Essential- Teach your puppy the basics. Gently touch him all over everyday. Don't forget his feet and toes. When your puppy is comfortable being handled, you are ready to advance to brushing and combing. Puppies can go to the groomer once they have had their vaccinations.

3-First visit to the salon- you should bring your pup to the salon prior to their appointment so they can become familiarized with all the sights and sounds.

4-How long will it take- First few appointments may take some time. It is extremely important for your puppy to trust his groomer and be comfortable with everything the groomer does. With gentle guidance, he will learn that grooming is an enjoyable experience and not something to be feared.

5-Do not come back early- wait until the groomer notifies you as if the puppy sees you or hears you they will be too excited making it  impossible to finish the groom .

6-Helping your puppy enjoy the experience- On the way to the salon be happy. If you feel stressed and nervous, your puppy will pick up on your feelings and may become fearful and apprehensive.  Your pets grooming salon is his special place. Allow him to anticipate and associate the slaon as fun and enjoyable. .

7-Main Objective- The most important accomplishment for the puppies first groom is -That he likes it! His first experience - positive or negative- will remain with him forever.
